Transform, Love, Trust and Radiate: Nourishing the Soul of the World
Bitter anger, fear, destructive skepticism – these strong emotions have been understandably persistent in American life for most of our Nation’s history. Why would modern times be different? I choose to allow those emotions to pass through me. I choose to transform in love.
I can’t deny their presence and I won’t shame myself for experiencing them. What’s more – it’s important that I choose not to shame you for having those same feelings. I also know that each day – I must continually recommit to that decision.
Instead, I’ll lean on teachings that help me trust in the essence of who I am.
First, in The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho teaches us that we nourish the Soul of the World by striving to become better versions of ourselves. This is not only a path forward in the direction of personal growth but also a quiet act of transformation for the world itself.
The Alchemist tells us that, “It is we who nourish the Soul of the World, and the world we live in will be either better or worse, depending on whether we become better or worse. And that’s where the power of love comes in. Because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are.” These words invite us to embrace the idea that by refining ourselves in love and patience, we contribute to a collective and universal good.
Next, if we’re serious about creating a better world, it will be important that we constantly remind ourselves of another critical teaching. Jesus calls every child of God to, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34). Love, in this sense, is not simply an internal feeling but an action that strives toward peace and service – unconditionally. I’m not suggesting that we allow ourselves to be victimized or ignore injustice. What I’m suggesting is that the profound love that Jesus taught serves to nourish the Soul of the World in defiance of fearmongering and hate.
And finally, as we strive toward self-improvement through transformational love, the concept of wu wei, or effortless action, will help us sustain our progress with soulful stamina and powerful patience.
The Tao Te Ching teaches, “The best way to live is to be like water. For water benefits all things and goes against none of them” (Chapter 8). Resisting the flow of external events will wear us out. We must continue our journey with purposeful patience.
To help me stay focused on my progress in these noisy and emotionally charged times, I’m going to begin with four practices to inspire and ground this path of transformation. I’m offering them here in the hope that they may be helpful to you.
1. Reflect Daily on Emotions and Growth
Affirmation: “I am transforming the world with love.”
Observe and reflect on emotions from the day, both positive and challenging. Don’t judge these feelings. Acknowledge them and give thanks for their energy. That energy is powerful fuel for progress.
Reflection: How can I use today’s energy to become better in some way?
2. Practice Loving-Kindness Toward All
Affirmation: “The world will benefit from my love.”
To truly nourish the Soul of the World, extend love beyond personal circles and towards all of life. Hold an intention of kindness and love for all beings—people, animals, plants, and the earth itself. Silently offer this prayer for the people in your world: “May you be peaceful; may you be loved.” As this practice deepens, it becomes not only an act of compassion but also a way to stay rooted in love, adding gentle strength to the world’s collective spirit.
Reflection: Who did you see today that you’d like to offer this prayer for?
3. Let Go and Trust Love
Affirmation: “I trust the power of love.”
Just as water adapts effortlessly to any form, we too can learn to let go of rigid expectations. Each day, identify one situation that creates resistance or frustration. Release the need to control it. Instead, allow a response to come from a place of love, patience, and empathy.
Reflection: How did you transform potential resistance or frustration into an opportunity to demonstrate love, patience or empathy?
4. Infuse Positive Energy into the Soul of the World
Affirmation: “I radiate positive energy.”
One of the simplest ways to nourish the world is by sending out ripples of positive energy. Look for one small act each day to uplift someone or something in your environment—whether it’s offering a kind word, assisting a neighbor, or showing appreciation for nature. When you contribute to the well-being of others, you share a fragment of your loving energy with the Soul of the World. Each small act reinforces the beauty of interconnectedness, making the shared world more resilient and harmonious.
Reflection: What was your loving act for today? What type of energy did it create?
Reminders
I hope you choose to walk this path with me in the coming months and years. I hope these practices serve as gentle reminders of our potential power to nourish the Soul of the World through love, patience, and small acts of kindness. Each of us carries the ability to contribute to a kinder world. Transform, love, trust and radiate.
Affirmations to carry us forward:
- I am transforming the world with love.
- The world will benefit from my love.
- I trust the power of love.
- I radiate positive energy.
In choosing love and kindness, even in the face of adversity, we can become a quiet but essential force in the world’s transformation. The practice of striving to be better than we are is both a gift to ourselves and an offering to the Soul of the World. I’d love to hear from you in the comments if you feel called to join me on this journey.
